About this Blog

Welcome to the blog I will keep as I head abroad for a year in Haifa, Israel. I have been awarded a Fulbright scholarship to compare the prosodic systems in American Sign Language and Israeli Sign Language. If all goes well and I can get the work done efficiently, I will also have time to do a preliminary look into Al-Sayyid Bedouin Sign Language prosody as well.

Each post in this blog is labelled according to the audience I have in mind for that entry, and the list of the "Labels" is available in the right column along with a search box. A list of each entry title and date is also available in the left column for your browsing pleasure.

Welcome and Bruchim Habaim.

Developing a Shopping List, and Checking it Twice

As I go about settling in I am keeping a running “wish list” to keep an eye out for as I explore stores and whatnot, and debating over how to budget, etc. A flashlight, or bedside lamp would not be amiss, although I have my keyring flashlight, and there is a switch not far overhead of my bed, so I’ve decided not to spend money on that. A fan would be nice for the dorm suite, but as I discovered a back door this morning (I thought it was a closet and couldn’t figure why it had a key-hole; Then I discovered what the third key on my keyring is for. ;-)), I can now get a crosswind through the place, so I’ll forego that, as well. Before I found the toilet paper roll the dorm staff was so kind to leave me, I was happy for the toilet paper I had wrapped around my toiletries in case they exploded on the plane. There were no leaks, so I found that I had plenty to hold me over until I would be able to buy TP and tissues. J Most of my clothes are folded up on shelves, but half a dozen hangers or so would be nice for my dresses and coats. Tonight we get a tour of Haifa, so I’ll keep my eyes open for a Target-like store. I found hand soap for the bathroom at the school convenience store, but will also be looking for a towel or mat for the bathroom floor and a dish towel for the kitchen. I remembered to pack some shower gel, but forgot a loofah. It’s not an essential, but in the states they’re very cheap. I don’t know if Israelis use loofahs, but I’ll see what I can find to get that splendid lather.

The final thing I have on my list so far is the one that I have actively sought and not yet found. I brought my adaptor and converter and a powerstrip. Unfortunately I did not notice that on the powerstrip I bought the plug that connects to the wall is one of those three-pronged plugs, while the converter only has two slits (and is shaped like a box, so the third prong disallows connection). Thankfully, my phone and iPod plugs have only two prongs, and my computer does not need the converter, as it can handle higher watts. So, I guess I don’t need a different converter or powerstrip, but it would be nice to be able to plug them in at the same time. I’ll see what I can find.

My room is quite functional now, with a provided wardrobe, desk, bed, and bedside table. As time goes on I hope to decorate it a little, since I will be here for a while. A plant and some wall hangings would be nice. We’ll see how finances shape up. J
