About this Blog

Welcome to the blog I will keep as I head abroad for a year in Haifa, Israel. I have been awarded a Fulbright scholarship to compare the prosodic systems in American Sign Language and Israeli Sign Language. If all goes well and I can get the work done efficiently, I will also have time to do a preliminary look into Al-Sayyid Bedouin Sign Language prosody as well.

Each post in this blog is labelled according to the audience I have in mind for that entry, and the list of the "Labels" is available in the right column along with a search box. A list of each entry title and date is also available in the left column for your browsing pleasure.

Welcome and Bruchim Habaim.

My Apartment

I am living in the "Talia" dorms, or Moadanot, on campus, but everyone calls them apartments, so I'll follow suite. Welcome to my new home:

This is our front door. (Yep, I said "our". I got a roommate because she didn't like her other dorm--in a different building. She's from New York and seems nice. But we're both so out and about we haven't seen much of each other.) Welcome to our home; Please, come in...

This is out kitchen and dining room. You can see my bedroom down the hall. We have hotplates, which I've never used. It will be an adventure. :) If you'll turn to your right, you can see our living room:

and the view out our front door. Unfortunately, we just see another building. Out their windows on the other side they can see down to the city. Awesome view. But we can see it from most places on campus, and we don't spend many waking, non-studying hours in the dorm anyway. :)

Come to my room:

It came complete with Winnie and his friends to welcome me. Note the second door that is open toward the camera. Mystery solved! It turns out my room is the "safe room" in case of emergency. Basically the extra door to the hallway and to the bathroom, and the special window which I hadn't realized was special, essentially make my room a bomb shelter. Each apartment has one so if we need to we can all hold up in there. Cool, eh? Here, let me open the second door for you:

Was working on my laptop on the bed. Oops, I shouldn't leave it on as soft surface like that, because the fans can't cool the bottom. Fire danger! Don't worry, I moved it shortly after taking the picture, and we're all okay. :-) To the right is my desk and the view out the window:

Pretty, eh? :-P I think I may name the plants. :-)

Opposite the window is the wardrobe (no Narnia, yet).

At the moment, the idea of having that heater in my room, even though it's completely off and cold, just seems ridiculous and like a weapon of torture, but probably I'll appreciate it come January. There is my bathroom door....

and my bathroom:

The first shower I took was delightful, but since then I've been taking them in the morning. I will need to change that habit because the water is pretty cool and my body temperature (or lack thereof) in the morning makes it pretty uncomfortable. I turned on the water heater today, but it didn't seem to make much of a difference.

Anyway, so, there's my new place. Baruchim habaim. :)

  1. haha - I love it!! Though I'm happy you moved your laptop -- what would you do if the shelter room burned first? Where would you go?! Can't wait to visit, so let me know when works for you! =)
