About this Blog

Welcome to the blog I will keep as I head abroad for a year in Haifa, Israel. I have been awarded a Fulbright scholarship to compare the prosodic systems in American Sign Language and Israeli Sign Language. If all goes well and I can get the work done efficiently, I will also have time to do a preliminary look into Al-Sayyid Bedouin Sign Language prosody as well.

Each post in this blog is labelled according to the audience I have in mind for that entry, and the list of the "Labels" is available in the right column along with a search box. A list of each entry title and date is also available in the left column for your browsing pleasure.

Welcome and Bruchim Habaim.

Just a few random thoughts

I've spotted two UFA's in the last few days. They both flew in the same way. A way which made me think they were hummingbirds, but then they were so very small that my mind thought them to be large insects of some sort. But then they were so big, even for large bumblebees that my mind thought they must be hummingbirds. But then. . .

Does Israel have very small birds?

On another note: I like listening to Hebrew sentences that are so well constructed in my mind when they come out of my mouth sounding not at all how they'd been originally planned, and then back-translating them to see what I said. The other day I meant to say to the driver, "Oh, excuse me. I need to get off at the street called 'Shimshon'." (With an implied request for direction as to which stop would be nearest.) However, I didn't know the word for "get off the bus", so I substituted "travel", like "I'm going to...". But then I could only remember the masculine form of the verb. And I mixed up the word for "street" with "first", and mispronounced even that on my first try...so what came out was more like, "Excoose me, I'm a man traveling to farst, er, FIRST Shimshon?" I held up my phone so he could clearly see I was reading off of a text message about where I needed to go, and he directed me to the right stop.

Two of the members of the Sign Language Research Lab are headed to present lectures at an international conference soon, so the rest of us got to serve as a practice audience for them today. The first lecture was given in Israeli Sign Language, and I was happy with the amount I was able to follow! (Um, let's not mention the accompanying slides projected in English behind the speaker. I was happy nonetheless.) I even asked a question in semi-ISL. :)

Yesterday I did a run barefoot for the first time. On the beach. It was lovely. My right ankle got a bit sore, but I enjoyed the extra work I felt on my proprioceptors.

I think that's all for now. I'm starting to settle down into more of a daily life. I'm also wondering who is still reading this. You'll probably be afforded more breaks as life becomes more day-to-day and I find less to say. :) If any questions come to mind, feel free to post them (I think I've fixed it so you don't have to have an account in order to post), or email me. Gotta love languages, trying to speak them, understand them, and get unconfused when a single word or sound changes a whole concept!!! :)
