About this Blog

Welcome to the blog I will keep as I head abroad for a year in Haifa, Israel. I have been awarded a Fulbright scholarship to compare the prosodic systems in American Sign Language and Israeli Sign Language. If all goes well and I can get the work done efficiently, I will also have time to do a preliminary look into Al-Sayyid Bedouin Sign Language prosody as well.

Each post in this blog is labelled according to the audience I have in mind for that entry, and the list of the "Labels" is available in the right column along with a search box. A list of each entry title and date is also available in the left column for your browsing pleasure.

Welcome and Bruchim Habaim.

Packing

In the welcome packet and at pre-departure orientation they advised us to bring a year's supply of our toiletries to Israel, as they are apparently much more expensive over there. I waited until I visited Oregon this summer so I could buy them without sales tax, and I cut a foot off my hair last weekend so I wouldn't need as much shampoo and conditioner, but I still managed to spend over $100 at Target. Someone mentioned later I should have gone to Costco. Yep, that would've been good.

Anyway, I got Shampoo, Conditioner, Gel, Feminine Products, Emergen-C, Meds (to make things move, stop things up, calm stomachs, prevent motion sickness, and ameliorate pain), Toothpaste, Floss, Deodorant, Razor Refills (I use a fancy-shmancy razor), Zone Bars (to have on hand in case food is scarce along the culture-shock path), Socks, a Bead Organizer for my earrings, considered a sewing kit and passed on it, mentally noted I have nail clippers and tweezers at home, and decided to buy a voltage adaptor and vitamins elsewhere.

I will let you know what I missed. In the meantime, start paying attention to how often you have to buy these products--I can't recall. I leave in three weeks, so no time to really estimate. I guessed at once every three months or so. *shrug*

  1. Oh yes, and all of my skin care and makeup I already had on hand, so I did not buy those at Target, but you may need to.
