About this Blog

Welcome to the blog I will keep as I head abroad for a year in Haifa, Israel. I have been awarded a Fulbright scholarship to compare the prosodic systems in American Sign Language and Israeli Sign Language. If all goes well and I can get the work done efficiently, I will also have time to do a preliminary look into Al-Sayyid Bedouin Sign Language prosody as well.

Each post in this blog is labelled according to the audience I have in mind for that entry, and the list of the "Labels" is available in the right column along with a search box. A list of each entry title and date is also available in the left column for your browsing pleasure.

Welcome and Bruchim Habaim.

"Everyone's always leaving!"

One of my friends here is leaving tomorrow to head home to Germany. I must say, I thoroughly enjoyed living in Washington, DC for two years, and am truly loving living in Israel this year, but boy! Both places are unique in such a way that people are always leaving! I am no exception, of course, but it's such a weird reality. I made some great friends in August. Most of them left in September. Then I made some very good friends in September, who left in January. And I have many friends still here, some I met in August, others in September, and still others just recently. But I know I will be leaving in June. And every time another person leaves, I can't help but think of it. :-/ (Plus my family will come visit in June, so I've been working on plans for those weeks, which forced me into thinking of my last week here, too.)

I am so thankful for the internet, and know that I have places to stay should I ever visit Germany, France, Slovakia, Holland, Haifa. But how often could that possible be? The same goes with the good friends I made in DC. But then of course, visiting Arizona, New Mexico, Austin, Louisiana, Alabama...well that's just a road trip away! *sigh* Well, Baruch HaShem for Facebook, I suppose. ;-)

Right now I'm deeply missing WSFC and Frontline, and I know I will have days when I'm there and missing Beit Eliahu, but I am so so so thankful for the people I've met and the experiences I've had in each place, and would not trade any of it for the comfort of not knowing what I would have missed if I had remained in one place. :-) See you all sooner or later, I hope. :)
